About Us

AILA is a not-for-profit company that organises and facilitates training in international investment law and arbitration to lawyers from across Africa aimed at increasing legal awareness amongst local lawyers advising their governments or investors on international investment agreements.

The sessions are delivered in London over a week of intensive training by an ad hoc team of eminent investment arbitration practitioners, professors and arbitrators from various parts of Europe (
The Faculty).  AILA will work in partnership with African governments to identify their needs and the most suitable lawyers to attend training. The goal is to deliver this training on an annual basis.

The annual
Programme will cover core aspects of investment treaty law and the resolution of disputes by arbitration.

AILA is also able to deliver training tailored to a specific government's needs either in the UK or in country.

Who is the training for?

Training is open to African lawyers qualified to practice in their countries, lawyers who:

  • Work in the Attorney General’s office (or equivalent) or are in private practice but are instructed by their governments or investors on investment treaty issues;
  • Are currently or will be involved in the negotiation of investment treaties; and/or
  • Represent their governments or investors in investment treaty claims
Non-lawyers and non-African lawyers with a demonstrated interest in African investment may also apply.  Participants are provided with course materials.  CPD/CLE hours may be claimed through attendance.

The tuition fee (£485.00) is waived for African lawyers who meet the above criteria.  To apply, complete the online Application Form here.
